I must be the only person who didn’t buy a new motorcycle last year, as BMW Motorrad managed record sales in 2022. Following similar news from Ducati, it seems the global market for motorcycles and scooters has defied some of the issues impacting other industries.
BMW Motorrad will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company in 2023, so they’ll be starting the year in a good mood. In 2022, the German manufacturer shipped 202,895 motorcycles and scooters, which was an increase of 4.4% on 2021.
In terms of motorcycle and scooter models, BMW have managed to sell almost 5,000 units of their new CE 04 e-scooter. But the leading sales are for the BMW R 1250 GS and GS Adventure, which achieved almost 60,000 units between the pair. And sports bikes are still selling, with the S 1000 RR reaching more than 10,000 customers. Combined with the S 1000 R, S 10000 XR and M 1000 RR, almost 23,500 bikes were delivered in 2022.
And smaller capacity BMW motorcycles continue to sell well, with the G 310 R and G 310 GS selling more than 24,000 bikes around the world.
Speaking of the global market, Germany is still be biggest source of new BMW motorcycle and scooter customers with a total of 24,129 models sold, an increase of 6.7% on 2022. But the record growth was largely driven by new highs in Asia (46,332 units / +7.4%) China (15,404 units / +7.7%), India (7,282 units / +40.3%), North America (17,690 units / +10.4%) and Latin America (25,480 units / +17.2%), led by Brazil,(13,051 units / +17%).
