Yamaha has unveiled a special edition 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the company beginning motorcycle production. Originally founded in 1955, Yamaha Motor began by producing the 125cc single cylinder YA-1 which immediately took a class win in the Mt Fuji Ascent and took all three podium places in the All Japan Autobike Endurance Road Race. And six decades later, the limited edition R1 will be in dealers from December 2015. Just check out the 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1 60th Anniversary Edition.
While it’s not quite as trick as the 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1M, it’s still rather gorgeous. The new R1 was introduced this year, and has been successful on the road and track. And the iconic Yamaha Yellow, Black and speedblock design works as well here as it always seems to.
In addition to the paint job, the 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1 60th Anniversary Edition also comes with an Akrapovic slip-on exhaust. Yamaha also revealed the standard colours for 2016, which will be a slightly updated Race Blu and Racing Red. Plus the R6, R3 and R125 models also get some new colours.
The news was announced at the Bold d’Or race, so obviously some track photos of the bike in action were required. Along with the required shots of a vintage Yamaha racer to make the connection really obvious.
There’s no official word on the price difference, but it shouldn’t be too much of a premium for the exhaust and a factory finish rather than a ‘homage’ created by someone with a few rattlecans. Just to finish off, Yamaha also sent a load of detail photos.

So we can confirm the 2016 Yamaha YZF-R1 60th Anniversary Edition comes with an engine, a dash, a rear shock, adjustment for pre-load etc on the top of the forks and a circuit board. Surprisingly none of it has been painted yellow besides the rear shock and there are no speedblocks to be seen on the engine internals – surely a missed marketing opportunity there. It’s an R1, it looks pretty and it could be yours from December.
