I always smile whenever I think back to childhood pillion rides with my dad. Whether he was picking me up from school or we were heading to Brands Hatch to watch some racing, to understand motorcycling, you have to experience it. And he spent a hefty amount on quality kit to keep me as safe as possible, but things were a bit different in the 1980s and 1990s. As shown by the new Duchinni Youth Cruiser jacket for younger riders.
Dedicated kids motorcycle kit was harder to find back then, so I started out with a generic leather jacket. Now, the Youth Cruiser not only has a 600D textile outer shell, but it comes with Level 2 armour at the shoulders and elbows, along with a removable Level 1 back protector. And it’s certified to EN17092-3:2020 AA, making it exactly the same as the adult motorcycle jacket, just a little smaller.
Another downside of the kit available when I was a child was that rain and wind could make for a pretty miserable experience. But kids today with the Youth Cruiser Jacket get a waterproof, windproof and breathable drop liner, a removable 75gsm quilted thermal liner, and a textile mesh lining with front and rear zipped vents to cope with warmer weather.
Along with zipped lower pockets, reflective detailing and a soft Neoprene fleece-lined collar, the Cruiser has 3cm sleeve extension panels and adjustment at the waist, sleeves and cuffs so it can grow with the wearer but doesn’t puff up and billow at speed.
The Duchinni Youth Cruiser Jacket is available in youth sizes XS-XL, which should be approximately right for ages 6-14, and comes in either Black or Stone. It’s zero-rated for VAT and costs £129.99.
Duchinni kit is available from various retailers, including Halfords, and Ghost Bikes. You can also find your nearest local Duchinni stockist via this handy map. And they do a growing selection of kit for younger riders, including the more bomber jacket-style Speed Racer for summer riding.
