Fans of MotoGP and Ducati can own some exclusive items from the bikes used in recent years, as Ducati Memorabilia now offers Desmosedici GP16 engine parts as collectibles.
You can buy mechanical components including pistons, camshafts and con-rods, with each presented in an elegant box with a certificate signed by Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO, and Luigi Dall’Igna, Ducati Corse General Manager. And a technical description along with the reference, where possible, to the rider, season and final race position achieved with that particular piece of the MotoGP machines.
Availability of each piece is obviously limited, and typical prices at the time of writing are €700 for an original Ducati Desmosedici GP16 piston, €800 for a con-rod, and €1,000 for an intake or exhaust camshaft. The Ducati Memorabilia project began in 2019, and offers parts from the factory teams in both MotoGP and World Superbikes via the Ducati online shop and dealer network.
The GP16 debuted for the 2016 season with riders Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone, with both riders claiming wins. Iannone took victory at the Austrian round, with Dovizioso winning at the Malaysian race. They were the first wins for the team since the Casey Stoner era ended in 2010.
It’s always been possible to pick up random parts of race bikes from a variety of sources over the years, but being able to purchase directly from Ducati means you should be able to have confidence it’s a legitimate piece of MotoGP (or WSB) history. It’s also slightly surprising any parts survive considering the number of satellite teams which inherit Desmosedici model the following year, and the tradition of factories destroying bikes and parts from their racing projects at the end of each season to prevent any competitors from learning their secrets. The GP16 was still appearing on the MotoGP grid in 2018, being used by both the Reale Avintia and Angel Nieto squads
