One for American motorcyclists, as Verge Motorcycles are first to commit to Tesla NACS charging for their electric bikes when they go on sale in the U.S.
The North American Charging Standard (NACS) is the proprietary system used by Tesla, but they also opened it up for use by other electric vehicle manufacturers. And it’s already been announced as coming to General Motors, Rivian, Volvo, and Ford vehicles. But Verge are the first motorcycle brand to announce they’ll also use the system.
And the result will be that Verge owners can use the Tesla network of around 17,000 charging stations in the U.S.
“We have been following with interest the discussion about the future of the charging infrastructure and Tesla’s decision to open up its NACS charging standard. Providing our customers with a comprehensive and easy fast charging system is vital in terms of Verge’s growth. We are currently preparing to enter the US market, and as the Tesla of motorcycles, this decision seemed like a natural solution for us,” says Marko Lehtimäki, Chief Technology Officer at Verge.
The European standard for charging connectors is the CCS2 (Type 2), including Teslas, and from my limited understanding of electrical systems, that’s not going to change any time soon due to the different power networks and delivery. Although if any electrical engineering experts know differently, feel free to explain it in the comments…
Most electric vehicles and motorcycles, like the Harley-Davidson LiveWire, use a CCS1 socket for charging in North America, which allows them to use networks including Electrify America or Chargepoint, but not Tesla.
Either way, it’s handy to know if you’re an American resident thinking of buying an electric motorcycle in the near future. Or when you’re planning a future holiday and want to hire a bike. It’s likely other manufacturers may follow in the future, but in the meantime, Verge will be the only option if you want easy access to Tesla charging stations.
