If you’re honouring one of the most famous pilots in history, then the new Weise Earhart women’s leather motorcycle jacket has plenty to live up to.
You’ll have to decide for yourself if the design looks good enough for the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic, with the soft and supple waxed finish. But the 1.1-1.3mm natural cowhide, quilted shoulder and back details and YKK vintage-style zips do come together pretty well, delivering a stylish and timeless leather jacket.
Inside the AA-rated jacket is CE-approved shoulder, elbow and back armour, along with a removable 75 gsm quilted vest and a short connection zip to attach it to suitable trousers.
You also get two external and three internal pockets, hip gussets and zipped cuffs, and the choice of classic Black, or an eye-catching Red option, which is similar to the colour of the Lockheed 5B Vega flown by Amerlia Earhart on her transatlantic flight.
It’s not clear whether Earhart was a particular fan of motorcycles, but she did take at least one documented trip in the sidecar of a police bike. But there are lots of aviation connections with various female motorcyclists, including the Van Buren sisters, who road across America in the 1910s, with the younger Augusta becoming a pilot and joining Earhart’s Ninety-Nines flying organisation, and that group also helped to inspire the Motor Maids, one of the oldest women’s motorcycle clubs in America.
