Designed for anyone contemplating a serious overland motorcycle trip, the lightweight and practical new Desert Fox Folding Fuel Cells seem like a genius idea for anyone that’s run out of petrol. There’s nothing worse than standing at the side of the road with a dry tank, or flipping to reserve to find it’s also empty.
It’s annoying and embarrassing by the side of the A1, but a lot worse if you’re in the middle of nowhere. And carrying a metal or plastic fuel container around the world is a lot of space to use up. So some adventure motorcyclists came up with the Desert Fox Folding Fuel Cells, which fold almost flat when they’re not filled with petrol, and don’t add weight or bulk to your luggage.

They feature a heavy-duty canvas on the outside to protect a flexible fuel bladder, with tough cotton webbing ‘daisy chains’ and D-rings to let you attach it anywhere you like. And the large screw-top filler will allow most sizes of forecourt fuel nozzle to be used, although you might have problems convincing your local supermarket petrol station to let you use it. Stored in a pouch on top of the Fuel Cell is a flexible spout so you can easily transfer the gas to your tank without spilling it everywhere.
It might be designed for adventure riders on overland trips, but most motorcyclists will have experienced a lack of petrol at some point in their riding lives.
The Desert Fox Folding Fuel Cells are available in three different sizes, and obviously you can mix and match for whatever you need. The 3 litre version is available for £46, the 6 litre costs £49, and there’s also a 20 litre version for £55 if you think it’ll be a while before you can fill up again. And you can find them for sale in the UK via Nippy Normans.
