There are a couple of BMWs getting major updates for next year, with the new 2021 BMW G 310 R launched alongside the similarly overhauled BMW S 1000 R.
The smaller G 310 R is aimed at newer riders and urban commuters, having originally launched in 2016 as a collaboration with Indian manufacturer TVS Motor Company. So for 2021, it continues to use a reliable 313cc liquid-cooled single cylinder four stroke engine putting out 34hp at 9,500rpm and 28 Nm of torque at 7,500rpm, but it’s been homologated to meet the EU 5 anti-pollution regulations.
It means the new model will keep a top speed of around 105mph, but that isn’t the main selling point as much as the 785mm seat height. Or the 158kg weight, when the bike is fully fuelled.
And you still get ABS as standard, with a 300mm single-disc and four-piston radial caliper at the front, and a 240mm rear single-dsic brake with a one piston floating caliper at the rear.
To make the 2021 BMW G 310 R even easier to ride, there’s an automatic increase to the idle speed when starting, and a self-boosting anti-hopping clutch so there’s less chance of accidentally stalling your bike, and it’s also lighter when changing gear, reducing engine drag and the chances of issues when you’re downshifting. Plus you also get an electromotive throttle controller for more sensitive throttle control.
The smaller BMW also gets a styling update to give it a more sporty look, with new engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and collant pump. Like the footrest plate and rear grab handle, they’re all painted in Titanium Grey Metallic, with the choice of Cosmic Black or Polar White Paint, or the Limestone Metallic Sport style option.
For 2021, the G 310 R gets an LED headlight and indicators, with a daytime driving light, to match the LED brake light of the outgoing model. And you get four stage adjustments for the clutch and brake levers to help people with smaller hands stay comfortable.
Like the S 1000 RR, you can expect to find the 2021 BMW G 310 R in dealers from late Spring 2021, with prices starting from £4875.
