The first thing to say about the new 1970s style open-face LS2 Bob helmet is that it’s obviously a bit of an odd name. But if you can ignore that, or the urge to be more formal and ask for a Robert, then it could be worth checking out.
It’s got the right type of motocross peak for that classic 70’s On Any Sunday look, and to keep stones and debris from hitting your face. And it gives you the option for a little bit of gentle off-road action, or removing the peak via three poppers to opt for a more road-based look.
The shell is composite HPFC, which aims to be tough, flexible and light, coming in at 1000 grammes. As well as being ECE 22.05 certified for road use, the Bob is available in three outer shell sizes, to avoid looking like you’ve got an oversized head and minimise issues when inner pads soften.
Speaking of Bob’s insides, there’s an integral drop-down sun visor to add a modern feature with short and long-step positions. Plus it’s 3D optically correct, scratch and UV resistant, and LS2 claim it’s easy to operate with your gloves on.
Also on the inside is a breathable, hypoallergenic liner over the foam inserts. You also get a reinforced chin strap, and the nice touch of a D-ring fastener, which is slightly unusual for cost-effective open-face helmets, and I always prefer it to seatbelt fasteners.
That’s about your lot. The new 1970s Style Open-Face LS2 Bob Helmet is available in solid Black, Matt Black or Nardo Grey, in sizes XS-XXL (53-64cm), and the “Lines” Black Jeans design. Prices start at £119 for the Black or Matt Black, and you’ll pay around £20 more for the Nardo Grey and Black Jeans designs. And you can pick up a spare or repacelement liner, peak, tinted or clear sun visor from the LS2 accessories range.
