When it comes to new motorcycle season, it’s easy to carried away. We might all be lusting after a top of the range bike, but when it comes to putting bums on seats, we need to be looking elsewhere. For instance, the news that the 2018 Peugeot Speedfight 125i 4th Gen has launched. It’s not going to be the fastest thing on 2 wheels. But it’s going to be the most powerful Speedfight scooter yet – which is great for younger riders, commuters or those who just want something simple to get around on.
The Speedfight range celebrated 20 years since launching in 1997, with around 600,000 bikes sold so far. The secret to success was that it looked cooler than pretty much anything else on the market when it first arrived. It was something that you could ride at a young age which actually seemed sporty. And it also worked pretty well, having ridden a few (and crashed one!).

So the new Speedfight 125i gets more power with the all-new liquid-cooled SmartMotion engine. But it’s also the most economical, capable of 134mpg (2.1 litres/100 km). It does this with the SYNERJET single-indirect fuel injection, and Alternative Current Generator (ACG) management. So if you’ve got enough charge in your battery, it’ll disable the flywheel when you’re accelerating and braking. So you get more power when starting, but also around 5% more fuel economy when riding.
You also get more braking performance with the Synchro Braking Concept (SBC) linked brakes. So when you pull the lever, you get the 215mm front and 190 rear discs working together without locking up or the front diving towards the floor. That’s on the left lever, but you can also add more braking by pulling on the right lever to stop in a hurry.
The sporty look is obviously still important to the 2018 Peugeot Speedfight 125i 4th Gen. So you get a decent amount of style, plus twin LED headlights at the front. Plus lighting above the front grille. And the back gets a nice brake light, which Peugeot claim is modelled on lion’s claws. Or maybe just three lines, flanked by the clear indicators, with what the company calls ‘ice effect’.
The 2018 Peugeot Speedfight 125i 4th Gen dash obviously isn’t the sexiest thing in all of existence. But the digital dashboard does have a backlit LCD display to make it easy to read. And it comes with a USB socket, plus it’s ready to have an X-Grip smartphone holder fitted. So you can keep your phone charged for navigation, emergencies or a selfie outside McDonalds. Which is what the kids appear to do instead of revving a two-stroke outside the chip shop.
Most importantly, the 2018 Peugeot Speedfight 125i 4th Gen will launch with a price of £2599, which includes an unlimited mileage factory 24-month warranty, and includes manufacturer delivery, pre-delivery inspection, petrol, VAT and a number plate. So you’ll just need the first registration fee and VED, and you’re ready to ride.
