If you want to protect the engine and frame on your BMW R1200GS, there are some new products around which will help. Whether you worry about the exposed valve and spark plug covers or the corrosion from water getting into holes in the frame, we’ve got you covered.
Machine Art X-Head Guards:
As in the image above, the Machine Art X-Head Guard will wrap around the cylinders of your BMW boxer engine. It means about 80% of the surface is covered, from top to bottom. And the polycarbonate outer shell will deflect flying debris as well as protecting the valve and spark plug covers in low speed falls.
The shell of the guards has been mixed to have both strength and flex under impact to cushion your engine. And inside is a thermoplastic rubber liner to help spread the load if your BMW hits the deck.
The guards fit with two stainless steel M5 T25 Torx Heads fasteners and one existing T50 bolt. In addition to the latest BMW R 1200GS and Adventure models, they also fit the R 1200RT (2014-on), the R1200R (2015) and the R 1200RS. The Machine Art X-Heads cost £149 per pair.
The Nippy Frame Hole Kit for the BMW R1200GS
There’s not much point in bolting on loads of protection for your bike if it’s rusting from the inside. And the holes in the frame of the BMW R1200GS can let in water and dirt, as well as looking a bit rubbish.
The Nippy Frame Hole Kit supplies you with nine TPU plugs which will fill your gaps. The material also resists oil and grease. And the subtle matt black fillings will pop into each frame fitting hole rather than requiring glue or screws. If you need access, just pop them back out and you’re sorted.
The Nippy Frame Hole Kit will fit all BMW R1200GS models from 2013 on, and costs £40.
