BMW Motorrad is off to a good start to the year, with BMW motorcycles sales up in 2017. In fact, the German manufacturer is having the best first three months ever, shifting 35,636 bikes and scooters between January and March.
That’s 5.5% up on 2016, with 1,848 more vehicles delivered. And in March, it was 10.9% up, with 18,265 deliveries for the start of the motorcycling season in the Northern hemisphere.
BMW sales have grown around the world, including France (up 14.4%), Italy (up 10.8%) and particularly in China (Up 52.2%). The biggest country by volume is still Germany (5,824 sales), followed by France (3,696) and Italy (3,463), compared to China (1,298) and Central/South America which sold 3,890 motorcycles and scooters collectively.
With 14 new and updated BMW models for 2017, the sales list is still headed by the traditional bikes you’d expect. The BMW R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure rule the roost with sales of 12,361 in the first 3 months of the year. Compared to that are the next biggest models, which are the BMW R 1200 RT (2,271) and the BMW F 700 GS (2,257). The R nineT range have collectively brought in 3,300 sales, and the S-Models managed 5,360.
BMW plans for 2017 include expanding the R nineT range to give models, and also offering a new BMW G 310 GS alongside the existing G 310 R to offer more choice under 500cc.
It’s too early to say the rest of the year will continue in the same fashion, but it’s a good start. In 2016, BMW sold roughly 145,000 across the full 12 months, so it’ll depend on how things go over the summer. But it looks like 2017 could continue the growth of motorcycling around the world, particularly in China and Central/Southern America.
