The Peugeot Speedfight 20th Anniversary edition is part of a decent claim to put the French moped in the list of iconic two-wheelers. After all, not many bikes make it through two decades, four model updates, and more than 500,000 sold. So the Peugeot Speedfight 20 Edition has a reason to celebrate. And the twin parabolic headlights and sharper style compared to more utilitarian scooters has always stood out a bit.
And it’s a celebration that’s open to everyone. Peugeot have applied the birthday paint to the 50cc model, which means 16-year-olds born after the Speedfight launched can be part of the anniversary on an AM licence.
Older car drivers can also get out on the Speedfight without taking any tests as long as they qualified before Feb 1, 2001.
The Peugeot Speedfight 20 Edition will cost £2199, which is £100 more than the normal model. For that, you get a special red and white paint scheme, with the 20 Edition displayed all over the place, including on the wheels. And the black double-stitched sport seat gets a removable pillion cowl. Just like a sports bike. And which is perfect for a pubescent teenager to lose the first time they ever give a lift to someone they fancy.
At least they won’t be able to misplace the aluminium footboards, which provide the perfect platform for showing off a new pair of Nikes. And the Peugeot Speedfight 20 Edition also gets a snakebite sports exhaust system. Do teenagers still mix cheap lager with cider to make it more drinkable?
The Speedfight 50cc range includes both air and liquid-cooled two-stroke engines. The 20 Edition is the air-cooled variety with a new Dell-Orto carburetor to improve performance. It also has a Shuricane front brake disc with a four-piston radial caliper, upside-down 32mm front forks , 13-inch alloy wheels, and the fuel tank located under the footboard for better stability and handling.
Modern scooters need to have the same gadgets as bigger models. So the Peugeot Speedfight 20 Edition gets a trip computer, LED indicators and rear lights, and an aviation style fuel cap. The dashboard has both USB and 12V sockets and will take a smartphone holder, along with the underseat storage for a full-face helmet.
Possibly the best thing for a 50cc special edition scooter is the news that it apparently has ‘lightweight mirror stems’, which is definitely the thing to impress your mates in the local McDonalds car park.
So that’s the new 2017 Peugeot Speedfight 20 Edition. If you’re trying to convince your parents to subsidise it, try mentioning the price includes manufacturer delivery, pre-delivery inspection, petrol, number plate and VAT. Don’t mention you’ll still need to pay for the first registration fee and vehicle excise duty. But you do get a two-year unlimited mileage parts and labour warranty
