The 2017 Peugeot Metropolis has launched at Motorcycle Live, revealing some updates to the three-wheeled personal transportation device. So if you like the two wheels front, one wheel back approach, particularly in slippery weather, then you’ll be overjoyed to know the new Metropolis meets Euro 4 emission laws.
What hasn’t changed is that the 2017 Peugeot Metropolis still used tilting front wheels to get around corners, and also keeps gadgets including smart key ignition and a type pressure management system. You can also still adjust the backrest and screen.
But for 2017, you now get lightweight 13 inch sports wheels at the front, with Michelin Citygrip tyres as standard. The chassis and suspension have also been redesigned, for a 50% stiffer frame. The aim is to improve the handling and have lighter, more responsive steering, but still make the Metropolis more stable and comfortable. So basically improve everything, in every direction.
The 2017 Peugeot Metropolis can stop 23% more quickly than the previous model. That’s down to the ABS braking, developed in partnership with Continental and Nissin, plus bigger brake pistons and 230mm diameter front discs.
The foot brake pedal activates combined front and rear braking, including the double piston caliper for the rear wheel. And one interesting innovation is that if you brake hard, the hazard warning lights automatically engage to try and warn those behind to slow down. So if you slow by more than 6 m/s (13mph), the hazards come on, and then turn off when you slow less than 2.5 m/s (5.5mph). Anything that reduces the chance of being rear-ended by a dozy driver has got to be a good thing.
The 400cc LFE PowerMotion engine has been updated, and there’s a switchable Traction Control System with Urban, Sport and Off settings. Meeting the Euro 4 standards, the 2017 Peugeot Metropolis still produces 36 hp and 38 Nm of torque at 5,250rpm, but now increased overall fuel economy up to 72mpg.
Other features on the 2017 Peugeot Metropolis include moving to a USB socket rather than a 12v plug, and the boot has been expanded to be able to fit a full-face helmet at last. You also get two smart keys, so everything is ready to operate when you get within 1.5 metres of the three-wheeler.
It’s still not necessarily a vehicle that you’ll lust over and put on your garage or bedroom wall. But as a commuter, and a reassuring way to deal with crap weather, the 2017 Peugeot Metropolis just keeps adding more and more practical features.
And if you do find yourself excited by the Metropolis, then get ready. Apparently a 2017 Peugeot Metropolis RX-R special edition is on the way. The difference will be a ‘mad black’ livery, with red inserts, tinted sports screen and aluminium footplate. To be fair to Peugeot, the Metropolis Black Edition they released earlier this year did turn the backwards trike into something which looked more like a special ops vehicle than a commuter.

The current 2019 Peugeot Metropolis has a list price of £8,099 for the Allure model, and £8199 for the RS ABS model, although both are currently reduced by £800. Unfortunately judging by your email address you may be out of luck, as Peugeot Scooters are currently not officially imported into the U.S and Canada, and I know from the car market import restrictions can be quite tough.
