This rare 1966 Velocette Thruxton is up for auction at Donington Park on July 28th, 2016 – with no reserve! But if you do want to buy it (and who wouldn’t?), the estimated price is between £10-12,000.
It’s not only rare to find a Velocette Thruxton in this kind of original, unrestored condition, but the bike isn’t even on the Velocette Owners Club register. It’s only had two owners from new, and reg number MPG502D has been in storage since the 1970s.
The Velocette Thruxton:
The Velocette Venom was already a successful racer with a 500cc pushrod engine, including setting a 24 hour land speed record in 1961 and winning the 1964 Thuxton 500 mile race.
The Velocette Thruxton celebrated with a flowed cylinder head, bigger valves and downdraft intake tract to produce 40-41hp. It also received a close-ration gearbox. That helped it to win at the 1965 Thruxton event, and take both first and second in the inaugral Isle of Man Production TT.
In total, around 1100 Velocette Thruxtons were produced before the company closed completely in 1971.
