Custom Yamaha XJR1300 'Skullmonkee'

The custom Yamaha XJR1300 ‘Skullmonkee’ has been created by Copenhagen-based Wrenchmonkees as part of the Yamaha Yard Built series. An earlier Wrenchmonkees build, the ‘Monkeefist’ actually inspired the 2015 Yamaha XJR1300. And it’s the 20th anniversary of the XJR1200/XJR1300.

The Skullmonkee is part of the Yard Built attempt to inspire buyers of normal Yamaha motorcycles with what can be achieved using mainly bolt-on parts. Although every bike in the series has involved serious time, craftsmanship and unique hand-made bits as well as off-the-shelf modifications.

For this project, the Wrenchmonkees Per Nielsen and Nicholas Bech focused on stripping the XJR1300 back. The cleaner handlebars get LSL Speed Match black aluminium clip-ons, Biltwell grips, an MMB mini digital speedo and a unique custom WM yellow headlight.

The brakes were upgraded with a Beringer set-up, including Hypersport brake discs, Beringer calipers, brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder and black braided steel hoses.

Some hand-made parts were created by Wrenchmonkees, including the CNC-milled aluminium triple trees and engine covers.

The standard front forks were also lowered 60mm, with a new front mudguard.

LSL provided the aluminium rear sets, which were then customised for a more aggressive riding position, and an LSL Titan steering damper was also fitted. The standard wheels have been kept, matched with Michelin Pilot Road 4 tyres, but the suspension has been upgraded with Ohlins STX 36 rear shocks.

The standard seat pan was kept, with a new seat and cover, plus a new tail section including a Wrenchmonkees custom rear bracket and LED light. And the view from behind also included the custom 4-into-2 stainless steel exhaust system and Wrenchmonkees/Spark silencers on the end. Under the seat is a unique aluminium battery cover with a lithium battery contained inside.
