The new 2017 Triumph Street Cup is an all-new model featuring the 900cc Bonneville engine in a modern cafe racer set-up.
Like the recently introduced Street Twin, the new Street Cup has a low seat height of 780mm and an accessible riding position, with huge range of accessories to make the bike more individual. And while the cafe racer look demands a sportier approach to match, an A2 licence kit will be available for new riders who want to combine a modern motorcycle with 1960’s inspired style.
The new 2017 Triumph Street Cup has been influenced by modern custom cafe racer builders. That means stripping things back with minimal bodywork to give cleaner lines. And the paint options are designed to compliment the bike perfectly.
You can choose from Racing Yellow and Silver Ice with Jet Black coach lining, and Racing Yellow pin-striping on the wheels, or Jet Black and Silver Ice with Gold coach lining and wheel pin-striping.
The fuel tank comes with a locking cap and some of the hand-applied pin-striping to accentuate the lines of the Street Cup. And you’ll sit slightly further back and higher than on the Street Twin, so you’ll be close over the tank to rest on the dropped ‘Ace’ handlebars. They’re also slightly lower and further forward for a racier position.
That helps the turn-in and agility, as well as getting you into a racier position. You’ll still be comfortable sitting on the authentic bullet seat with an Alcantara effect top panel and silver contrast stitching. And your feet get to rest on Thruxton R style foot pegs.
Thankfully, Triumph are using modern bar-end mirrors, but they’re designed and forged for a cleaner profile. And the clocks get polished stainless steel bezels, as you’d find on the Thruxton models.
And obviously, there’s the colour matched fly-screen at the front. It sits above the Thruxton forged headlight mounts, plus the painted bowl and bezel, and the sportier and more modern fork protectors.
The Street Cup is a more agile bike with a raised rear end from longer rear suspension units. The actual rear wheel travel is still 120mm, as per the Street Twin. But the steeper head angle and changed riding position means the Street Cup should be more fun when you get out of town and onto some sweeping back roads.
Also helping the more sporty pretensions will be the new Nissin twin piston sliding front caliper and floating disc. That’s matched with a single 255mm disc and Nissin twin piston floating caliper at the rear, and aided by ABS.
The removable seat cowl aids the sleek, cafe racer style. And it’s quick to remove if you find the Triumph has made you a new friend.
In addition to the ABS for added safety for you and your possible pillions, you also get switchable traction control as standard. And the ‘torque assist clutch’ should make changing gear lighter and easier. You also get an engine immobiliser, a USB charging socket under the seat, and ride-by-wire throttle control.
Underneath your backside, and the badges for Triumph and the Bonneville, you’ll find the 900cc engine with its charismatic 270 degree firing interval to deliver smooth and linear power through all five gears.
The latest version of the Bonneville engine gets an 18% increase in torque and 22% more horsepower in the midrange. That’s 54bhp at 5,900 rpm and 90Nm at 3,230 rpm, showing that you won’t need to be constantly revving the Street Cup. Which is good for sensible things like reducing fuel emissions and improving efficiency by up to 36%. The liquid cooled engine also has a new extended service interval of 10,000 miles, making it cheaper to own.
Fortunately you don’t need to wind up the revs to make the most of the shorter and lighter twin upswept exhausts. They get a satin black painted wrap and stainless steel end cap to transmit the sound of the British twin. But also available in the list of 120 accessories are Vance and Hines silencers, depending on the legality of them in your country.
The clocks look simple with the speedo and rev counter. But the digital menu also packs in trip settings, a service indicator, fuel level and consumption, traction control settings, fuel range to empty, an odometer and finally a clock.
And if you like options, then the new 2017 Triump Street Cup accessories list should keep you happy. You’ll get more than 120 choices to improve the performance or change the looks. We’ve already mentioned the Vance and Hines silencers, but you can also add fully adjustable Fox rear suspension units, adjustable billet machined aluminium levers, a custom look tail tidy, compact LED bullet indicators, and heated grips.
The A2 licence kit for the new 2017 Triumph Street Cup will be available from late Spring 2017. Combined with the low seat height, ergonomics, and the range of modern safety features (ABS, TCS, torque-assist clutch), and it should make a great A2 bike for anyone who wants the cafe racer style.
