Changes to road tax laws

Changes to road tax laws

August 22, 2014 By Feef Leave a Comment

Make sure you are aware of new road tax laws which take effect from October this year. One of the new rules means you can’t sell the road tax with a vehicle.

The most talked about aspect of the changes is that as of October 2014, paper road tax disks will no longer exist. From then on, you’ll be able to manage your road tax online, through the post office or with a simple direct debit. Paper disks, although currently still a requirement, have been pretty much irrelevant in terms of enforcement with ANPR and other systems in place to monitor and check if vehicles are taxed, insured and MOT’d.

The changes are claimed to make it more difficult to operate untaxed vehicles but also cut down on the costs of administering the whole thing by about £10 million a year , as well as reducing paper usage and with 72 tonnes of paper used to make tax disks each year, that’s not an insignificant amount.

You will also need to be careful to ensure the DVLA is informed of any change of ownership, and any unused tax will not be able to be transferred with the vehicle. Instead, you’ll have to claim a refund for the remaining tax, with a failure to notify of change of ownership carrying a fine of up to £1000.

The DVLA have even put together  a short video available on YouTube to provide all the info you should need
