Team Gibson was started by me (Tony Greenslade) and a friend Peter Wright back in 2005. We had been racing a 50cc moped at the BMF for a few years and had got a taste for the racing lifestyle.
Being skint, constantly working on bikes and driving miles in a van. So over a few drinks at the Stafford Classic Mechanics show we came up with a plan to run an old 250LC proddie bike I had recently bought in the Yamaha Past Masters Championship (YPM). I had the bike, van and workshop space. Peter had the desire and money to enter a race. So Team Gibson was formed.
Eight racing seasons later we are still at it. Riders have come and gone, bikes have changed. We even dabbled with racing four strokes (not the most successful campaign), but Yamaha Past Masters is still our main stomping ground. For 2013 we have Ben Miles #25 and Andy Davies #101. Both are riding TZR250’s and hoping to better their results in 2012.
Ben will be doing the whole season and is out to get his best ever finish in the Championship. At the last meeting in 2012 his 7 years of racing in YPM’s finally paid off with him taking his first win and also lifting the Danny Whalin and Paul Hogan Trophy’s. As well as the YPM championship he will also be doing a few of the Two-Stroke Grand Prix championship rounds on his 1990 TZ250 Reverse Cylinder.
Andy is doing a selection of the YPM rounds this year with his first being the 3 rd round at Pembury. He finished on the podium at the last round in 2012. As well as riding in the championship, Andy also tunes and builds engines for his own bike and the 2012 YPM Champion Graham Higlett. So even if he is not racing he is in the paddock keeping busy.
As well as the racing we also display and parade a selection of race machines under the Team Gibson banner. Last year we were at the Festival of 1000, Spa Bikers Classic and the Yamaha Classic Festival. This year we are returning to the Mallory and Spa, as well as taking in the Classic TT in August. As well as displaying the machines at some BSB rounds. Bikes in our stable include a couple of YZF750’s, TZ250’s, Honda RS250 and an YZR500 replica.
